Transition

We currently have places available for 2017/18.

As a learning community with the needs of our children very much at its centre, we aim to ensure all students at Barnsley Academy enjoy the journey from primary to secondary education.

Effective and meaningful transition is essential to ensure that all students achieve success and develop as an individual. We aim to ensure all students enjoy and benefit from a smooth and progressive transition from Key Stage 2 to KS3, through to KS4 and beyond.

Transition at the Academy, Monday 10th July until Friday 21st July 2017.
Here at the Academy, we work very closely with our local primary schools to ensure your child’s transition to secondary school is as straightforward and enjoyable as possible. To this end, all Year 6 students attend the Academy in July for two weeks to enable them to meet their teachers, meet new classmates and to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings.

Students will enjoy a timetable specifically designed for them over the two weeks and includes a wide range of curriculum subjects in which they will be working on the theme of ‘Evolution’. Your child’s primary school will be doing some preliminary work with them about ‘Evolution and Change’ leading up to the transition.

In terms of more practical arrangements, I would like to confirm that during the two week transition we would like your child to wear a white school shirt (not polo shirt), their current school trousers and plain black footwear. We will be providing every student with a school tie on the first day of transition, it is to be worn for the whole two weeks and then kept ready for September. We know this helps to make them feel a part of the Academy community right away and helps them to integrate quickly.

On day one we will also provide your child with a free school lunch in our canteen and this will give them a chance to register their thumb print on our cash machines ready for Tuesday. This means they will need to bring cash with them on the Tuesday to load onto their account via ‘thumb recognition’ to pay for their lunches and/or snack at break.

‘Parent’s Information Evening’, Wednesday 12th July, 4-5pm.
This will give you the opportunity to meet your child’s Form Tutor for next year and be provided with specific information about the Academy in preparation for September. On the same evening, you will have the opportunity to buy your child’s school uniform for September from our supplier Vortex. We will send further information regarding the details of this evening nearer the time.

Graduation Day, Thursday 20th July
We will be holding a graduation ceremony for all Year 6 students, and would like to invite you to come along and see a short presentation of your child’s two weeks at the Academy followed by them receiving their graduation certificate. This is a very special ceremony, enjoyed by everyone involved. Further details will be provided nearer the time.

To help your child feel part of our school community during the transition weeks we would like your child to be in uniform which will be white shirt with stiff collar, black trousers or skirt, black shoes, blazers are not required until September 2017.  Our uniform is available to purchase from Vortex or online from Tesco’s using the following website address: http://uniformeasy.com/131749. Details of our uniform can be found on here our website: http://www.barnsley-academy.org/Students/Uniform-Equipment
