BARNSLEY ACADEMY ROCKS IN REGIONAL FINALS

~66 strong team win place at finals of national ‘Rock Challenge’~

A 66 strong team from Barnsley Academy has won the regional finals of the prestigious ‘Rock Challenge UK,’ with a performance helping to highlight the plight of refugees.

Held on Monday 13th February at XXX, in front of a packed house of family, friends and community members, the event saw the academy take on schools from across the North of England, with each school tasked with producing a five to eight minute performance, reflecting the personalities, concerns, hopes, dreams and interests of those taking part.

Rock Challenge itself is a series of performing arts events promoting healthy life choices. Supported by the Be Your Best Foundation, the annual event sees thousands of young people take part in three regional finals (Scottish, Northern and Southern), culminating in a grand UK National Final held in June.

As part of the challenge, teams up to 100 performers, 20 stage crew and 14 support crew (including student and teachers), choreograph their own dance-drama production, as well as designing and making their own sets and costumes and selecting and recording the medley of music for their soundtrack.

And on Monday, the Barnsley Academy team, made up of students from Years 7 to 10, wowed the judges (featuring specialists from the performing-arts industry) with their performance, ‘Lost Children,’ which told the story of a family of refugees, fighting to survive another day.

Not only did the academy win the Northern heat and a place in the grand final, to be held in Grimsby on 30th June, but the team was also awarded the following:

·       Award of Excellence for Concept (sponsored by Efficiency North)

·       Award of Excellence for Visual Enhancement (sponsored by Efficiency North)

·       Award of Excellence for Costuming Character (sponsored by Janome)

·       Award of Excellence for Drama (sponsored by Garfield Weston Foundation)

·       Award of Excellence for Lighting (sponsored by T-Mec)

·       Award of Excellence for Soundtrack (sponsored by Zeamu Music)

·       Award of Excellence for Entertainment (sponsored by CEOP)

Commented Barnsley Academy Principal Mr Stephen Dixon:

“This is a fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work of all those involved, who have been rehearsing every week since November. Also special thanks to South Yorkshire Police, who sponsored the team’s t- shirts. We now look forward to cheering them on in June&

Y7/8 and Y9 Rugby Squads

James Pirie

This incredible picture is of our Y7/8 and Y9 rugby squads who played in their respective tournaments last night at Shaw Lane.

Fantastic performances from both teams ensured that we won all of our games, with great performances from students who were playing competitively for the first time, to students who are seasoned veterans!

A very proud moment for Mr Pirie and Mr Parkinson to take 32 lads to a rugby tournament and dominate on this scale, something which the students must take all of the credit for. Please congratulate them if you see them today.
