Sixth Form Courses and Entry Requirements - Post 16 Level 3 Course
We offer a programme of Level 3 courses at Barnsley Academy, which are designed to build on the success of GCSE and prepare students for entry to university. The Sixth Form at Barnsley Academy provides a range of both traditional academic GCE Advanced Level examination courses and vocational skills-based BTEC National Certificates, (equivalent to 2 A levels) or Diplomas (equivalent to 3 A Levels).
Each GCE Advanced Level entails 5 hours of face to face taught sessions per week, whilst the BTEC Level 3 programmes involve between 6 and 7 hours face to face taught sessions per week.Students are expected to spend at least double the taught contact time on independent study to ensure positive learning outcomes.
We are constantly developing our programme to meet the needs and interests of our students and our community. Specific details of all current courses are provided in the enclosed subject documentation.
Level 3 students may take a purely academic pathway, namely 4 A/S Levels in Y12, continuing with their 3 strongest subjects to A2 in Y13, or a purely prevocational pathway involving the study of 1 or 2 BTEC subjects or Applied Advanced levels. We also offer a blended pathway, whereby students opt for a combination of a maximum of 2 traditional GCE Advanced levels plus one BTEC or Applied Advanced level.
