Barnsley Academy has teamed up with the Red Box Project to help tackle ‘period poverty’ in the community.

The Red Box Project itself is a community-based, not-for-profit initiative which aims to support young people throughout their periods by providing red boxes filled with free sanitary products to local schools.

The scheme was founded in March 2017 by three friends who decided to take action after reading about ‘Period Poverty‘ and the impact it was having on some young women, who were missing out on their education because they couldn’t afford the products they needed during their period.

Barnsley Academy students have teamed up with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to take part in a life-saving roleplay.

Working in conjunction with Elsecar Heritage Railway (EHR), the event took place at EHR’s Wath Road site on Thursday (28th February), with the students helping to recreate a major incident involving the emergency services.

The exercise saw the Year 9 and 10 drama students, supported by Drama teacher Mrs Parkes and Creative Arts Technician Miss Robertshaw, take on the role of a group of people affected by a toxic substance released into the air. The group complain of burns and irritations to the skin and eyes, which are dealt with by the emergency services.
