The Mathematics Department at Barnsley Academy is a dynamic, welcoming department which provides our students with the necessary mathematical and logical skills required to succeed in a school context and also in the outside world.

Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, our students will follow a scheme of work which will enable them to master all of the skills needed for success at Key Stage 4. We take an in-depth approach to covering the basic topics in Number, Geometry, Algebra, and Data, which will form the foundation of the skills they will need for work at GCSE level. Key Stage 3 classes will also enjoy one lesson per week dedicated specifically to developing reasoning and problem-solving skills, as well as giving students space to explore mathematics beyond the curriculum.

Students in Years 7 to 8 are also welcome to attend Maths Enrichment Club during Period 6 on Mondays. Here they will be given the opportunity to get creative and playful with mathematics, and investigate some of their own ideas. They will also get to play games which will require and cultivate logical thinking.

Key Stage 4
Students at Barnsley Academy follow a three-year Key Stage 4 curriculum, working towards their GCSEs from Year 9 through to the when the exams take place at the end of Year 11. This three-year approach provides for depth as well as breadth, allowing ample opportunity for coverage of content and exposure to exam-style questions.

The year group are split into Higher and Foundation classes depending on students’ prior attainment and individual targets, so that lessons can be planned for the needs of the class. In Key Stage 4 the students are formally assessed each term and, by adopting a question level analysis approach, we are actively engaged in tailoring lessons to specific individual needs.
