Welcome to Barnsley Academy...

As Principal of Barnsley Academy, I am delighted to welcome you to our website. I hope that it provides you with all the information you need about the academy, but more importantly, gives an insight into life here and enables you to celebrate with us the achievements of our incredible students, families and staff.

In the ever-changing world of education, we believe in keeping things simple. Our goal is to provide the very best school at the heart of its community. To achieve this, we are committed to the provision of personalised support for all of our students, helping them to achieve all that they are capable of and fulfilling their aspirations. The academy is also driven by a desire to work with parents and carers to develop an environment which provides a truly holistic and inclusive approach, generating high expectations and standards at every level.

Our Academy is sponsored by United Learning – a group of schools and academies which aims to provide excellent education to all children and young people across the country. As a United Learning academy, we are able to work within a national network of successful schools and offer more than any single school could. Working collaboratively enables all of United Learning’s schools and academies to bring out “the best in everyone” – students, staff, parents and the wider community.

We are a rapidly improving school that places our students at the centre of everything we do - something praised by Ofsted in our last inspection. Our staff are exceptionally hardworking and dedicated to improving the life chances and choices for all of our students and, as Principal, it is a privilege to work with such dedicated professionals and amazing students.

Steve Dixon

Principal

ANYONE FOR TENNIS!

Barnsley Academy students head to Wimbledon for a grand day out - It was game, set and match when Barnsley Academy students took a trip to Wimbledon last week to watch stars from the world of tennis. Led by teachers Scott Bramall and Rebecca Wright, the trip was a reward for eight lucky students, who saw Venus Williams in action on court one, as well as other games on the outside courts. During the visit, the students - many of whom had never been to London before - also had time to visit popular landmarks such as Big Ben and the London Eye.

Said Mr Bramall:  "We had some amazing seats on court one and despite the weather, were able to watch some great games. Everyone had an amazing day and the students behaved impeccably." Added Executive Principal Nikki Shaw: "What an incredible but thoroughly well deserved experience for our students and a big thank you to Mr Bramall and Miss Wright who gave up their own time to lead the visit." Those students attending were: Jamal Hazelhurst (Y7), Alex Rosa (Y7), Shauna Dudley (Y7), Klaudia Wyskiel (Y7), Filip Rudniki (Y8), Jamie Caine (Y8), Eliza Maphosa (Y8) and Caitlin Murray (Y8.)

ENGLAND’S SUE SMITH SCORES A WINNER AT BARNSLEY ACADEMY 13 July 2016

ENGLAND’S SUE SMITH SCORES A WINNER AT BARNSLEY ACADEMY

England international Sue Smith helped pass on her winning ways to students when she paid a visit to Barnsley Academy this week.

Kickstarting her career with Tranmere Rovers in the 1990s, Sue went on to play football for a number of top league clubs including Leeds United, Lincoln Ladies and Doncaster Rovers Belles. Her fleet footed skills also won her a place in the national squad, representing England from 1997 until 2011, with a grand total of 93 caps.

Now a mentor for the Sky Sports Living for Sport Project, which works with young people aged 11-18 from across the country using sport to inspire students to achieve more, Sue called in on Barnsley Academy to lead a special assembly for Year 8 students, talking about aspirations.

Commenting on her visit to the academy, Sue said:

“As a Sky Sports mentor, the aim is to help motivate young people through sport, focusing on the keys to success and working these into practical and theory sessions. At Barnsley Academy, the students really responded to the assembly and I was particularly impressed with how they listened and learnt from the session.”

Barnsley Academy’s Executive Principal Nikki Shaw said:

“We were delighted to welcome Sue to the academy, with those students who took part finding it incredibly inspiring.”
