Welcome to Barnsley Academy...

As Principal of Barnsley Academy, I am delighted to welcome you to our website. I hope that it provides you with all the information you need about the academy, but more importantly, gives an insight into life here and enables you to celebrate with us the achievements of our incredible students, families and staff.

In the ever-changing world of education, we believe in keeping things simple. Our goal is to provide the very best school at the heart of its community. To achieve this, we are committed to the provision of personalised support for all of our students, helping them to achieve all that they are capable of and fulfilling their aspirations. The academy is also driven by a desire to work with parents and carers to develop an environment which provides a truly holistic and inclusive approach, generating high expectations and standards at every level.

Our Academy is sponsored by United Learning – a group of schools and academies which aims to provide excellent education to all children and young people across the country. As a United Learning academy, we are able to work within a national network of successful schools and offer more than any single school could. Working collaboratively enables all of United Learning’s schools and academies to bring out “the best in everyone” – students, staff, parents and the wider community.

We are a rapidly improving school that places our students at the centre of everything we do - something praised by Ofsted in our last inspection. Our staff are exceptionally hardworking and dedicated to improving the life chances and choices for all of our students and, as Principal, it is a privilege to work with such dedicated professionals and amazing students.

Steve Dixon

Principal

Sixth Form Consultation

United Learning and Barnsley Academy are opening a period of formal consultation on the future of the sixth form provision at the academy.
The academy attempted to recruit to its sixth form for 2015 September entry, but only 12 students expressed an interest. This low level of interest would not allow for a broad enough educational offer to be provided, and the decision was taken not to offer places to these students, and to have no Year 12 intake in 2015/16. Due to the low numbers currently in the sixth from (25 students) it has been agreed that a formal consultation should take place to consider the future of this provision.
More detail regarding this consultation can be found under the sixth from tab at the top of this page.

Whats happening in the LRC

Sandra Stott

We have been inviting students into the LRC during morning registration with their form tutors for induction sessions, which explain how to use the library effectively. This has had a massive impact on the amount of books we are loaning out to key stage 3 students. We keep a tally of books loaned and returned and at the moment year 8 are in front on our leader board.

We are also encouraging students to loan books and write book reviews by offering vivo points as rewards. This has gone really well with years 7 and 8 as we have had quite a few reviews brought in to display on our board.

Our Lexia tree is filling up and ‘blooming’ with new leaves as students are working their way through each level on the Lexia program, with some students choosing to work through break time in order to finish a level and get their names on a new leaf. Three year 8 students progressed to level 3 last week. I’m sure many more will follow as we have some hardworking, determined individuals among our groups.

The LRC continues to be as popular as ever during break and lunch times as students arrive to play board games, use the computers and finish homework. Some simply choose to sit and chill with a book or chat to friends. Whatever the reason the LRC is always a hive of activity.
