~Reading initiative introduced at Barnsley Academy thanks to support from Henry Boot Construction~

Henry Boot Construction has teamed up with Barnsley Academy to support a reading initiative aimed at helping young people with mental health issues.

Called ‘Reading Well for Young People’ and run by national organisation The Reading Agency, the scheme provides 13-18 year olds with a unique catalogue of books recommended by health professionals and young people with first-hand experience of mental health issues.

Teenagers taking part in the scheme, which is also supported by the Society of Chief Librarians and the Association of Senior Children's and Education Librarians, are discovering the positive effect of reading on mental health and wellbeing, with reading for pleasure linked to a reduction in the symptoms of depression. People who read books regularly are also on average more satisfied with life, happier, and more likely to feel that the things they do in life are worthwhile.

Helping to introduce ‘Reading Well for Young People’ to Barnsley Acacemy, Henry Boot Construction has donated £350 to help the school buy new books recommended by the scheme, along with other titles around mind-set and personal development, with the books now available in the academy’s library.

Commenting on their support for the scheme, Ryan O’Loughlin, Project Director for Henry Boot Construction, said:

“Henry Boot Construction is delighted to assist with the purchase of new books for Barnsley Academy. The ‘Reading Well for Young People’ scheme is a fantastic programme that supports adolescent mental health issues and we hope that our contribution will go some way towards ensuring the scheme is a success for the school and it’s students.”

Barnsley Academy’s Principal Stephen Dixon added:

“Projects such as this are incredibly important in helping support the wellbeing of our students and we are delighted to be part of the scheme and extremely grateful to Henry Boot Construction for their support. This also reinforces our commitment to deliver an Education with Character – an education which introduces our students to new experiences and helps to broaden their horizons.”

Education with Character

United Learning schools, including Barnsley Academy, do not just focus on academic success but believe that there is more to an excellent education than solely exam grades. They therefore aim to develop character, compassion and service in their pupils. United Learning calls this Education with Character, #EducationwithCharacter

The Reading Agency

The Reading Agency works every day towards a world where everyone, irrespective of age or economic background, is reading their way to a better life. The organisation believes that reading can help tackle life's big challenges, from social mobility to mental health - and is determined that no one is left behind as it strives towards realising that vision. In support of that, the Reading Agency works closely with its partners to deliver programmes to more than a million people per year.
