~Worsbrough Bank End, Hunningley and Barnsley Academy Pupils to help start Tour de Yorkshire~

Pedal power dominates the school timetable on Friday 4thMay, when pupils from Barnsley Academy, Worsbrough Bank End and Hunningley Primary Schools help launch this year’s Tour de Yorkshire.

A group of 18 children from the three schools will take part in a bike ride from their respective sites to the Town Hall, led by Sustrans Active Travel Officer Dave Atherton and organised by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, as part of its promotion of the Tour de Yorkshire.

During the event, which will also be supported by members of staff from the three schools, the junior cyclists will take part in a town centre precession on closed roads, standing on the podiums and signing in just like the professionals, before helping to start the men’s race for the Tour. They will also have the opportunity to take part in the town centre celebrations, exploring the Star Wars exhibition and enjoying the town centre festivities.

Steve Dixon, Principal at Barnsley Academy, commented:

“The Tour de Yorkshire is one of the highlights of the local sporting calendar, so to be asked to take part is a real honour and one which our pupils are very much looking forward to.”

The event has also been welcomed by Nic Thorpe, Executive Headteacher at both Hunningley and Worsbrough Bank End Primary Schools, who are already hosting a programme of bike themed activities, including:

  • The Big Pedal – Running from 23rdto 27thApril and aimed at all pupils, with a request for as many as possible to cycle or scoot to school. Those coming by bike on Wednesday (25thApril) also received a free ‘bike breakfast’ including a croissant/brioche, fruit, yoghurt and juice
  • Learn to Ride – On Tuesday 15thMay, pupils from key stage 1 and 2 who currently can’t ride a bike are invited to attend the ‘learn to ride’ session, supported by parents/guardians

Commented Mrs Thorpe:

“We already do a lot of work with our pupils based around cycling and this event will be a great way for them to celebrate that, as well as being part of one of the region’s leading sporting events.”
