BARNSLEY ACADEMY STUDENTS SUPPORT RESCUE ROLEPLAY

4th March 2019

Barnsley Academy students have teamed up with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to take part in a life-saving roleplay.

Working in conjunction with Elsecar Heritage Railway (EHR), the event took place at EHR’s Wath Road site on Thursday (28th February), with the students helping to recreate a major incident involving the emergency services.

The exercise saw the Year 9 and 10 drama students, supported by Drama teacher Mrs Parkes and Creative Arts Technician Miss Robertshaw, take on the role of a group of people affected by a toxic substance released into the air. The group complain of burns and irritations to the skin and eyes, which are dealt with by the emergency services.

Commenting on the event, Stephen Dixon, Principal of Barnsley Academy, said:

“Taking part in events such as this form part of the academy’s commitment to deliver an Education with Character – an education which introduces our students to new experiences and helps to broaden their horizons. The roleplay also helped our students to see first-hand the fantastic work done by the emergency services during a major incident.”
