Character Curriculum

At Barnsley Academy, we believe that character is built through consistency, respect, stability and effort—every single day. Our Character Curriculum is designed to help students grow not only academically, but as resilient, responsible and confident young people who are ready to thrive in the world beyond school. Each year group follows a carefully shaped journey that supports their development at every stage.

Year 7 – Belonging and Beginnings

Year 7 focuses on establishing strong routines, building positive friendships and helping students feel part of our school community. This year is about settling in, gaining confidence and creating a sense of belonging that sets the foundation for success.

Year 8 – Growing and Flourishing

In Year 8, students build on their early experiences through pledges, meaningful conversations about role modelling and exploring the wider world. They begin to recognise their strengths and flourish as individuals.

Year 9 – Looking Ahead

Year 9 is a turning point where students start thinking about their future beyond school. They explore option subjects, consider their interests and talents, and engage in voluntary or enrichment opportunities that broaden their horizons.

Year 10 – Developing Identity and Independence

As personalities develop further, Year 10 students become increasingly curious about their next steps. They are introduced to effective study techniques and begin to work in groups that reflect their pathways and ambitions.

Year 11 – Shaping the Future

Year 11 is all about decision‑making and preparation for life after GCSEs. Students take part in careers guidance, applications, interviews and structured morning meetings. Our Success Lounge supports them in staying motivated, organised and ready for their next chapter.
