Paul Canoville Foundation

Barnsley Academy was proud to welcome Paul Canoville to the Academy to officially launch an inspiring new program focused on promoting allyship, belonging, and a strong sense of community among students.

The visit marked the beginning of an initiative designed to recognise and celebrate commitment, resilience, and positive attendance. Students taking part in the program were challenged to demonstrate one of the following:

  • 100% attendance, showing exemplary commitment to their education
  • Significantly improved attendance, highlighting remarkable progress and determination.
  • Admirable attendance despite personal challenges, recognising resilience and perseverance

Delivered in partnership with The Paul Canoville Foundation, the program encourages students to take pride in their dedication while reinforcing the importance of consistency, support, and inclusion within the Academy community.

Intermediate Maths Challenge

On Wednesday 28 January, 120 students in Year 9 and 10 attempted the Intermediate Maths Challenge, a National exam-based competition aimed at the country's strongest Mathematicians.

Students showed ambition and resilience throughout and we are really pleased to have achieved 16 Bronze certificates, 9 Silver certificates and 1 Gold award - with this student being selected to take park in the Pink Kangaroo follow on round.

Congratulations to all involved and a huge thanks to the Maths Department for running the challenge!

Magdalen College Oxford

This January, 31 Year 9 and 10 students were lucky enough to be able to visit Oxford University to give them a taste of university life and see the best university in the world.

After arriving in Oxford, students met some current Oxford students and learned about how university works and the activities on offer (they were fascinated by the concept of underwater hockey) before asking lots of thoughtful questions about topics ranging from food options to scholarships to whether there was a Taylor Swift society!

We were then treated to a tour of the beautiful Magdalen College with current students, including visiting the resident alpacas. The buildings and architecture were inspiring - students commented that it was like Harry Potter!

We then had a lovely lunch eating together in the College hall - it was brilliant to hear so many students talking about the paintings on the walls and their ambitions to attend university. After lunch, the students engaged in a lively History taster session - well done to Katie, Bishop, Alessia, and Alfie for their standout contributions.

Students also enjoyed a quick tour of the city centre and Exeter College to see more of the university, before we said our goodbyes and departed for Barnsley full of aspirations.

Well done to all students for your participation - we hope this has inspired you to think
about attending university.

Barnsley Academy Receives Prestigious UNICEF UK Gold Award

Barnsley Academy in South Yorkshire is set to receive the prestigious UNICEF UK Gold Award, as part of the charity’s Rights Respecting School programme.

UNICEF – the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights – grants the Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school.

Gold is the highest accolade given by UNICEF UK and shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s rights at all levels of school life. Only 8% of secondary schools in England have achieved the Gold Award, with Barnsley Academy becoming the first mainstream secondary school to receive the honour across Yorkshire and the Humber.

In a report accrediting the school with its award, the school community was described as “highly inclusive” and as one with “an unwavering commitment to equity, dignity and mutual respect for rights in all aspects of its work”.

Understanding the importance of this, one student at the school said: “Our community has strength in its unity”.

Another particular strength of the school highlighted was the positive impact of educating its young people about their rights, and the way that the school builds their confidence. With this, students were also praised as being “well informed and thoughtful young people” who “feel empowered to play an active role in their school and the wider community”.

Stephen Pitcher, Principal at Barnsley Academy, said:

Our students are at the heart of everything we do here at Barnsley Academy and it has been fantastic to see the positive impact that the RRSA has had on them, and on the school as a whole. Our entire school community has been working hard to ensure we instil values of respect, care and belief in our young people. It is a testament to them that we are one of the few schools in Yorkshire to receive this incredible award from UNICEF UK, and this will only reinforce the efforts we have collectively made to ensure our students thrive during their time with us.

UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Programme Director, Martin Russell, said:

It was inspiring to see how Barnsley Academy is clearly embedding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child through the school’s ethos and practice. We know that when a whole school community embraces the concept of children’s rights, the impact on relationships and young people’s sense of engagement and empowerment can be transformational. Thanks and congratulations to all the young people and staff.

The UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools initiative is aimed at schools across the country, including those in an early years setting. Currently, it works with nearly 5,000 primary schools, secondary schools, schools for children and young people with special educational needs and pupil referral units across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Schools have reported a positive impact on pupil behaviour, relationships and well-being by enhancing pupils’ self-esteem, leading to better learning and improved academic standards.

From Barnsley Academy to Eton College

Talented Year 11 wins prestigious Orwell Award scholarship to attend Eton College for Sixth Form.

A Barnsley Academy student is celebrating after his impressive GCSE results secured him the Orwell Award scholarship and a place at Eton College to continue his studies at A Level.

16-year-old Deacan achieved the grades he needed in order to secure the Award. It is aimed at boys at UK state schools who show great promise but would not otherwise have been able to access such a transformative educational experience.

As part of the application process, which involved a thorough series of written assessments and interviews, Deacan had to demonstrate intellectual curiosity, an openness of mind and character, and the willingness to step outside his comfort zone. Having now achieved his grades, he will be able to join the rest of his cohort at Eton to begin his A Level studies this autumn.

Alongside being a dedicated young student, Deacan has been highly involved in his school and local community. As an elected member of the Barnsley Youth Council, he has represented his peers across the borough and the over 900 students at Barnsley Academy as a voice for young people. He was also a member of the Barnsley Academy student leadership team, coordinating the student prefects that work on Academic Standards to promote a love of learning and positive attitudes.

He is also a South Yorkshire Combined Assembly representative, working with young people not just from Barnsley, but from Sheffield, Rotherham, and Doncaster, to promote equity across the region in education and in society. He works to coordinate, plan, and evaluate conferences across the region to explore the impact of government policy on young people.
Over the summer, Deacan has already had the opportunity to attend residentials and live in the student accommodation on site in readiness for the beginning of term. He is now keen to finalise preparations and begin his new A Level courses.

Speaking of his time at the school, Deacan said:

During my time at Barnsley Academy, I have had such a great selection of opportunities and support throughout each year I’ve been there. All members of staff have always been supportive of my learning and have always pushed me to be the best I can be. The school has helped to shape who I am today by building my character as well as helping me develop my understanding in subjects and in life.

“The school has pushed me beyond what I expected of myself, and as a result, they encouraged me to apply for Eton and have supported me through all my journey.”

Speaking of the moment his place at Eton was confirmed, Deacan also said:

“I was overcome with emotions, and I am extremely excited for the upcoming years I will be at Eton. I’m forever grateful for all the help and support I have received throughout my journey, as all the people who have helped me will always remain an important part of my life. I cannot wait to start at Eton and begin a new chapter of my life.“

Congratulating Deacan on his scholarship, Stephen Pitcher, Principal of Barnsley Academy, said:

“This is an amazing opportunity and a well-deserved scholarship Award for one of our own. Deacan has been a pillar of our student body, a determined scholar and an active member of our local community. We are all incredibly proud of Deacan and excited to see him continue to excel at Eton College.”

Deacan’s mother Kim said of the opportunity:

“Deacan is just such a star and has always had a strong love for learning. When he joined Barnsley Academy, he grew in confidence with each passing year. He strives to do his best in everything he puts his mind to.

“When he came home to inform me that Barnsley Academy had suggested he applied for the Orwell Scholarship at Eton College, I just knew he would thrive. Barnsley Academy has been so supportive to Deacan – when he was offered the Scholarship, staff celebrated with us and shared in our joy.

“This past year, Deacan has tried so hard to achieve his best and has been flourishing during his secondary years at Barnsley Academy. I can't wait to see how far he goes now.”

Deacan’s father David added:

“We are all so proud of Deacan and the amazing opportunities that Eton is going to give him. From nursery, through primary school, then secondary at Barnsley Academy he has always been working hard and impressed his teachers.

“When Deacan applied for Eton last year, although he was very excited for the opportunity he knew it would be a long shot and didn't want to get his hopes up. When the acceptance email came through, we were all so proud, excited, and a little nervous for him.

“Since going to Eton over the summer and having a taste of what life would be like down there Deacan has been so excited and counting down the days to go. We are all very proud and cannot wait to see what the future will hold for him in this life-changing opportunity.”

Harry, who is going on to Sixth Form in Huddersfield where he’ll be studying Physics, Maths and Geography at A Level, said:
“Thank you to all my teachers at Barnsley Academy. The teachers here are really good at helping students – ahead of our exams they put on extra revision sessions after school and we could come in on Saturdays to keep working and improving on our coursework. If you put the effort in, they reciprocate the effort tenfold. Overall, my experience at school has been great and, from an educational perspective, has set me up well for Sixth Form.”
Principal at Barnsley Academy, Naveed Khan, who is taking up a new post in September, said:
Congratulations to all our students collecting their GCSE results today. They have shown real determination and commitment to their studies, particularly over the last two years, and have seen their hard work rewarded today. Thank you to staff across the school who have played a pivotal role in ensuring our young people’s success and also to our parent community whose enduring support has been invaluable.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Principal at Barnsley and am grateful to the entire school community for helping to make it such an excellent place to teach and learn. I wish all our students and staff the best of luck for the future which I have no doubt will be very bright.”

Students Smash Target of Cycling from Barnsley to Paris

Last week, students at Barnsley Academy took part in a collective ‘cyclathon’, with the aim to promote Mental Health Awareness Week, a UK-wide initiative, by cycling the distance from Barnsley to Paris.

The group of 33 students rose to the challenge. Through their collective enthusiasm and teamwork over the course of the day, they exceeded their target by cycling 1917km – almost triple their expected distance to Paris.

To do this, they made use of the academy’s bicycle suite, and were encouraged to put their own individual speed and endurance on the bikes to the test, whilst timings and distances were recorded by the school. A number of students were awarded with Mental Health Awareness badges for their efforts during the day.

As part of efforts to promote Mental Health Awareness Week’s ‘#MomentsForMovement’ and ‘Move your Mood’ campaigns at the academy, a charity bake sale was held, with all proceeds going to The Mental Health Foundation.

The event took place alongside a wider programme led by United Learning, a national group of schools of which Barnsley Academy is a part. The programme, PARIS 2024, aims to inspire students to be physically active and try sporting challenges in the lead up to this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Amara, a Year 9 student at Barnsley Academy, said of the ‘cyclathon’ event:

The cycle to Paris was very motivational because it inspired me to be even more fit and it was a good experience for me to raise awareness for mental health.

Another Year 9 student, Jessica, added:

The activity was quite hard but I'm happy I was able to participate and raise awareness for mental health.

Kirsty Kilbane, Assistant Principal at the academy who organised the event, said:

It is fantastic to see the students and staff showing such enthusiasm and perseverance in the ‘cyclathon’ challenge – working together to exceed their target distance by a long way. Having good physical and mental health is so important– not only for learning, but also for general wellbeing outside of the classroom. The efforts made by students and staff across the academy to raise awareness and money for this cause are truly commendable.”

EXPLORING ANATOMY: A HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE FOR ASPIRING MEDICAL STUDENTS

Barnsley Academy recently hosted an exciting event for KS4 students as part of the Premed Anatomy program. This immersive experience allowed students to participate in live dissection sessions, providing a unique opportunity to explore the intricate workings of the human body.

The program, designed to inspire future healthcare professionals, included seven dissections covering various body parts, helping students develop essential skills and a deeper understanding of human anatomy.

The day-long sessions were academically enriching and aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring that students not only gained practical experience but also reinforced their classroom learning. The hands-on approach and expert guidance from leading human anatomists made the event both educational and inspiring, igniting a passion for the medical sciences among the young participants.

A MAGICAL DAY AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE: STUDENTS SHINE IN THE MAGIC FLUTE

On Tuesday, 1st April, a group of our students had the exciting opportunity to visit the Royal Opera House for an immersive concert, The Big Sing. This special event marked the launch of United Learning’s collaboration with the Royal Opera House on a new project based on Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute.

As part of this project, students from across United Learning have been working with artists from the Royal Opera House to create a unique performance of the famous opera. The project aims to promote students’ creativity, confidence, and collaboration skills. So far, students have learned six songs to perform at the launch event. Bringing together 1,700 students from 53 schools, they delivered a vibrant performance of the opera alongside the Royal Ballet & Opera Orchestra and professional opera singers.

Looking ahead to the Summer Term, students will continue to learn the rest of the repertoire to perform at one of three concerts across the country in June and July. These concerts will be held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, and Corn Exchange in Cambridge.

BARNSLEY ACADEMY STUDENT AND STAFF MEMBER HONOURED AT NATIONAL AWARDS CEREMONY

June 2024

Barnsley Academy is celebrating after Year 10 student Kaitlyn Walker and staff member Sarah Morgan took home two of the most coveted awards at United Learning’s national Best in Everyone Awards. Both were commended at a magnificent black-tie gala held at the Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield on Friday 21st June.

Kaitlyn Walker won the ‘Leadership and Service’ Award for her active role in both the school and local communities. At the academy, Kaitlyn is the Chair of the school’s first ever Student Council, where she presides over meetings and ensures ideas and voices across all year groups are heard. Locally, in her role as Barnsley Youth Mayor, she works with young people across the region to campaign on key issues that are impacting them, which has included meeting with magistrates and key political figures, such as local MP Ben Jarvis. Kaitlyn is also a member of the National Youth Parliament through which she works with charities and organisations on national projects.

Speaking of her win, Kaitlyn said:

"I'm honoured to have been chosen to receive such a prestigious award, alongside some of the most talented students in the UK. I wish to inspire the young people of my local constituency to possess the ambition and determination to lead a fulfilling life and reach their goals."

The academy is also commemorating the win of Sarah Morgan who was crowned ‘Secondary Early Career Teacher of the Year’ for her proactive approach to exposing her students to music in new and exciting ways. Since joining the academy, Sarah has made a huge contribution to the music department, facilitating a school choir and a wide range of ensembles and bands. Under her guidance, Year 10 students also got the unique opportunity to perform in an Evensong with Millfield School at St Paul’s Cathedral – the first time Barnsley Academy students have ever been involved in such an event.

Commenting on her award, Sarah said:

"It was lovely to be recognised for this award and to see the awards presented to other students and staff for such amazing accomplishments. It was a really inspiring evening."

First held in 2013, the annual Best in Everyone Awards celebrates the accomplishments of students and staff at United Learning schools across the country. The awards evening also gives credit to some of United Learning’s most inspirational and hard-working individuals and teams. This year, awards recognised both academic excellence and extracurricular achievements, including notable contributions to local communities.

To take home their awards, Kaitlyn and Sarah were first nominated by staff members at Barnsley Academy and later selected by a panel of judges from a shortlist of excellent candidates across United Learning schools nationally.

Naveed Khan, Principal at Barnsley Academy, said:

Very well done to Kaitlyn and Sarah on their respective awards. Each year, the Best in Everyone Awards showcase the real talent, ambition and resilience of individuals across United Learning and the standards to win an award are incredibly high. We are therefore so proud to have two highly-deserving award winners at the academy, both of whom inspire everyone around them with their commitment and dedication to serving their school community. Many congratulations again to Kaitlyn and Sarah.”

A HARMONIOUS TRIP: KS3 STUDENTS SHINE AT MISST'S TOGETHER DAY

On Thursday, 20th March, 20 enthusiastic KS3 students embarked on an exciting journey to Nicholas Chamberlaine School in Coventry to participate in MiSST's Together Day. This special event was designed to unite students from MiSST schools across the north, all gearing up for MiSST's 12th Anniversary Concert at The Barbican in London this April. The day was filled with vibrant musical activities, including intensive practice sessions where students honed their skills in orchestra, sectionals, and choir. The atmosphere was electric as students collaborated and learned from each other, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

Throughout the day, the students demonstrated incredible dedication, spending approximately four hours playing their instruments. Their hard work and perseverance were evident as they showcased remarkable determination and growing confidence in their musical abilities. The event not only provided a platform for students to refine their talents but also inspired them to strive for excellence in their performances. As they prepare for the upcoming concert, the experience at MiSST's Together Day will undoubtedly serve as a memorable and motivating milestone in their musical journey.

SELECTION BOXES FOR SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Towards the end of November, we held a charity bake sale and skipping event to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. This was all the idea of Year 8, Alfie, who wanted to raise money so that he could buy Christmas selection boxes to deliver to the children in the hospital at Christmas.

Grateful for the life changing support that he had received there, he had decided he wanted to give something back and wanted to show support for those children likely to be in the hospital over Christmas.

This week, Alfie, along with some of the staff and student leaders from Barnsley Academy, delivered the selection boxes to the hospital, bringing a smile to many young people going through a tough time.

Word of Alfie’s bravery, selflessness and kindness has since spread and Radio Sheffield asked if they could interview him in school today as they wanted to share his story.
Well done, Alfie! You are a true inspiration to us all!

Eco-conscious Students Deliver New Initiatives at Barnsley Academy

New student-led Eco-Committee is encouraging young leadership in support of green initiatives, including tree-planting and recyclin

This work has seen a brand-new Eco-Committee set up at the academy which is enabling young leaders to develop their own ideas for how to tackle environmental issues and encourage whole-school engagement.

The Eco-Committee, which comprises students from Year 7 to Year 10, has recently worked on an environmental review of the school looking at topics including waste, biodiversity and energy. They have devised an action plan and an Eco-Code for how they would like to change the habits of both students and staff to reduce waste and improve biodiversity around the school grounds.

Alongside this, the students are working closely with staff towards achieving The Eco Schools Green Flag – an international accreditation that has recognised and rewarded young people’s environmental actions for over 25 years. This involves demonstrating their commitment to green initiatives and designing programmes for the school which will help improve local and global communities, such as a new recycling scheme and the ‘Turn off BA’ initiative – with the latter aiming to ensure that all unnecessary electricity outputs at Barnsley Academy are turned off overnight.

Recently, students also supported a local initiative headed by Dan Jarvis, Labour MP for Barnsley Central, to plant more trees in the area. Representatives from Barnsley Academy’s Eco-Committee joined Mr Jarvis earlier this month to plant a new tree in the school grounds.

Commenting on their work on the new Eco-Committee, Cameron Wild, a Year 10 student at Barnsley Academy, said:

“Our work has helped reduce waste. We have reduced the number of computers left on overnight and started a paper a recycling programme.  We have also started to improve the biodiversity around our school grounds. It has helped us to understand how much we could change our environment around school. Small changes make a big difference. Overall, I really enjoy working with others to help make our school a better place and I am looking forward to working on more projects in the future.”

Naveed Khan, Principal at Barnsley Academy, said:

“Combatting the effects of climate change and protecting our precious natural resources is an issue close to many of our hearts, including our students. Through our new Eco-Committee, it has been fantastic to see our students developing initiatives that will make a difference both in school and locally and showing leadership as they put them into practice. We look forward to supporting them to continue this work and taking positive steps to address environmental issues for the future.”

Lord Chief Justice’s visit to Barnsley Academy

March 2022

Barnsley Academy was delighted to welcome the Ian Burnett, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales to the school this week.

The visit provided students interested in a career in law with the opportunity to ask insightful questions into his role and understand more about the justice system in England and Wales.

This was part of an exciting opportunity for our students and forms part of a programme to raise aspirations of students. One student said, “for a while now I have been looking into different paths to take for my future in law: university, apprenticeships, A-levels, etc. So, by meeting Lord Burnett it has given me a sense of comfort and relief, knowing the paths he took and the opportunities he had. Also meeting George and Karl (local judges) showed me that you do not need to be from a prestigious, London background to have the same opportunities; something I was worried about previously. I am very grateful for the push I received to continue down the law route and one day meet him again as the barrister I hope to be.”

Young Artist at Barnsley Academy Shortlisted in International Art Competition

March 2022

Sian, a talented young artist in Year 11 at Barnsley Academy, is in the running to take home the top prize at United Learning’s International Art Competition after her work was selected from 57 entries for the final shortlist.

The art competition, now in its 14th year, challenges students aged between 15 and 18 across the Group to draw, print or paint an original piece of artwork and submit a high-quality digital photograph of the piece. Those students who finish in the final four are given the opportunity to have their work displayed at Tokyo’s celebrated International High School Arts Festival, whilst the winner receives an all-expenses paid trip to Japan to see their piece exhibited in person.

Having progressed through the first two rounds of judging, Sian is one of ten students across the country to see her work be shortlisted. Sian’s piece, titled ‘Deep in my thoughts’ is a hyper realistic self-portrait in pencil, which depicts Sian from a bird’s-eye view with her hair falling behind her. It demonstrates her attention to detail, with every individual strand of hair drawn with immense precision.

Speaking of her piece, Sian said:

“The piece that I entered into the competition has a very special meaning to me – I created it last year as a way of processing the grief I felt after my grandma passed away.

“I am thrilled to have been shortlisted amongst such exceptional talent from across the country and especially to have my work presented alongside A Level students. I'm so excited to be in with a chance to go on this once-in-a-lifetime trip to Tokyo.”

Naveed Khan, Principal at Barnsley Academy, said:

“I am delighted that Sian has made it to final ten. Her artwork is incredible and we are so proud of her. What is particularly pleasing is that Sian’s work has been selected amongst a very high calibre of artwork, including work submitted by A Level students. We have our fingers crossed that she wins the competition and gets the opportunity to travel to Tokyo. Irrespective of the outcome, this a great achievement and one I’m sure she will remember for many years.”

All ten pieces will now go before United Learning’s Executive Team and a panel of professional artists who will have the difficult task of voting for their favourite artwork. The winners and three runners-up will be announced via social media on 17th March.

Magdalen College, The University of Oxford Trip

Just before half term, a group of our Year 9 students visited Magdalen College and St Edmund Hall, which form part of The University of Oxford as part of our raising aspirations programme. Students engaged a talk from Magdalen’s Outreach Facilitator who is originally from Barnsley, question and answer sessions, tours of two colleges at Oxford University as well as attending academic sessions.

Our Year 9 students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and the University staff found our students to be “a pleasure to work with”.

The experience has inspired many of the students to consider top universities for the next steps of their academic paths with one student saying, ‘the visit to Oxford University was a great opportunity for us all. It gave me a lot of information about the University and made me feel as it could be a potential option for me in the future’.

Motivational Speaker - Steve Beckles-Ebusua

January 2022

Last week Year 11 had a visit from Steve Beckles-Ebusua, a well-regarded motivational speaker who has a vast amount of experience speaking to and working with students to support motivation and positive habits for success.

Steve worked with all our Year 11 students in 50-minute workshops, in which our students completed tasks to build their confidence. Our students found the experience extremely valuable and provided some fantastic feedback:

'I found the experience enjoyable and learnt a lot about the way we look at things - such as learning specific quotes to live your life by - and how that can affect our outcomes in life. The speaker was very friendly and engaging. Overall, it was an empowering experience.' – Trudie

‘As someone who finds self-confidence a topic that is very hard to grasp due to the stresses of revision for GCSEs, Steve (the Speaker with the Orange Tie) was phenomenal at calming yet motivating me for the future ahead by relating to how far he has come as a person - we all felt like he was one of us. Myself and my fellow classmates all thoroughly enjoyed his funny yet educational presentation and we all especially appreciated how he got every student involved in the tasks, building our confidence without us even knowing, so by the end of the session we left with a positively uplifted demeanour. The personality of Steve was visibly represented by his incredible sense of style: the orange tie easily reflects a friendly, down-to-earth and memorable image which we were all grateful for. I was so thankful that he gave his time, energy and wisdom to help us see challenges as a hidden opportunity, educating younger people that ‘when you change the way you look at something, the thing you are looking at will change’. – Elizabeth

The experience was highly rewarding for our Year 11s, so much so that Steve will be coming back later in the year to work with our Year 10 and Year 9 students.

We look forward to welcoming him back.
