Curriculum Introduction

Barnsley Academy is a learning establishment that promotes high standards from staff and students in every subject, in every lesson, every day.

We support the learning of students in the classroom (and beyond) by enabling teachers to perform the basic functions of their roles and support them to plan engaging lessons, prepare inspiring resources and mark student’s work in order to maximise their progress.

Our aim is to meet the needs of young people in Barnsley by preparing them for adult and working life in the 21st century and recognise that the world of 2020 will be very different to the world of today; the pace of change is increasing, hence the importance for flexibility. When students come to us at the start of Year 7, they are already part-way along a learning continuum that, with our help, will continue for the rest of their lives.

As such, Barnsley Academy’s curriculum aims to:

  • Provide a flexible curriculum, underpinned by literacy, to offer differentiation and personalisation in order that our students can achieve, then exceed nationalstandards of achievement, attainment and progressions;
  • Give our students the best possible outcomes in order to move onto the next part of their academic journey;
  • Encourage our students to make the right choices for their future with a broad range of subjects, enrichment activities, and outstanding independent advice and guidance; and
  • Build on the notion of ‘expert practice’ as early as possible to feed into the changes that have been made in the national curriculum and new GCSE specifications.
