A Love of English and offering students engaging experiences…
Young Writers Competitions:
As a department, we love to give our students a chance to compete and be creative. We are currently working together with Young Writers to provide our students with regular opportunities to take part in national competitions including ‘Welcome to Wonderland’ ‘Spine Chillers’ and ‘Busta Rhymes.’ It’s not only important to us that our students make progress, we also want them to develop a passion for our subject and to have an outlet where they can be creative.
Creative Writing Club:
Our weekly creative writing club, though only in its infancy, has a number of dedicated members who come to share in all things creative – writing anything from limericks to horror stories! Every week these students come to us to flex their creative muscles and, in doing so, create a fun and energised after-school experience.
Trips and performances to enrich learners and to create experiences beyond the classroom:
We believe that the classroom is the place where the most effective learning takes place but we appreciate the importance of giving students different opportunities to enjoy and experience the texts we deliver. That is why all students (who meet the academy’s behaviour and attendance expectations) are given the chance, in KS4, to experience live performances of some of the texts that we study. Over the last few years, we’ve had the pleasure of taking great numbers of students to see performances of
Romeo and Juliet, A Christmas Carol
and
Blood Brothers.
World Book Day -
Every year we celebrate World Book Day, as a whole school community. Each year we choose a new theme, based on a book or series of novels - this is the driving force behind the day. Normal English lessons take a new twist, while there are whole school literature treasure hunts and interactive quizzes and even bespoke menus in the canteen. The Hunger Games Year was an interesting one – Squirrel burgers on the menu; thankfully not real ones!
