Janine Astley 0 384

Barnsley Academy students have teamed up with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to take part in a life-saving roleplay.

Working in conjunction with Elsecar Heritage Railway (EHR), the event took place at EHR’s Wath Road site on Thursday (28th February), with the students helping to recreate a major incident involving the emergency services.

The exercise saw the Year 9 and 10 drama students, supported by Drama teacher Mrs Parkes and Creative Arts Technician Miss Robertshaw, take on the role of a group of people affected by a toxic substance released into the air. The group complain of burns and irritations to the skin and eyes, which are dealt with by the emergency services.

Those ‘who shall not grow old’ will be remembered by Barnsley Academy students, when the school commemorates the centenary of the end of World War I.

Known as ‘the war to end all wars,’ the global conflict, which resulted in the deaths of millions of young soldiers, ran from 1914 through to 11th November 1918 - Armistice Day.

On Friday 9th November, Barnsley Academy remembers the fallen with a programme of ‘immersive’ activities across all areas of the curriculum

Barnsley Academy joined with other Yorkshire schools including Sheffield Park and Sheffield Springs Academies and their local primary schools for two show-stopping performances.

Last week’s evening performances of ‘Celebrating Difference’ were received with rapturous applause by sold-out audiences at Barnsley Academy.

The production was one of the centre-pieces of United Learning’s Cultural Festival, which takes inspiration from BBC Ten Pieces. The Festival, which is part of the Group’s commitment to deliver an Education with Character, seeks to unlock students’ creativity and inspire them to try new things.  Across the country, United Learning students are being introduced to new types of music and art forms and asked to develop their own creative responses.

Janine Astley 0 1260

Students and staff at Barnsley Academy are today celebrating their GCSE results, which continue the academy’s year on year improvement and have risen to 46% of students achieving five or more A*-C grades, including a 4 or above in both English and maths.

This year, English and maths grades were awarded a numeric value, with 9 being the new top grade, representing the very best of performance.

Notable individual successes include:

  • Curtis Evers, who achieved an incredible 3 Grade 9’s, 8 A*’s and an A, by far the best GCSE results a student at Barnsley Academy has ever achieved. Curtis is going on to study at the prestigious Queen Ethelburga’s College on an academic scholarship.
  • Morgan Haigh who achieved a Grade 9 in Maths, 3 A*’s in the Sciences, a Distinction*, 3 A’s and 2 B’s
  • Owen Beasley, who made, on average, almost 2 ½ grades more progress in each subject than would be expected nationally, including an A* in Photography

Stephen Dixon, Principal of Barnsley Academy, said:

“These results show an encouraging improvement across the board, with some excellent individual performances, such as Curtis Evers and Morgan Haigh. I’d like to thank all our staff at the academy for their relentless hard work over the year and congratulate every student that is celebrating today”.
