At Barnsley Academy, we are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all students. Our ethos is built around kindness, dignity, and mutual respect – values that ensure every young person feels protected, valued, and able to thrive.
We believe that all students, whatever their race, culture, gender, faith, sexual orientation, physical or intellectual abilities, have the right to:
- A safe and secure environment, both in school and on their journey to and from school.
- Focus on their learning without fear of intimidation, harassment, or discrimination.
Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at Barnsley Academy. We take every concern seriously and work proactively to prevent bullying, educate students, and respond quickly and effectively when issues arise.
Our Rights Respecting Approach
As a UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting School, our anti‑bullying work is underpinned by children’s rights. Key rights linked to our anti‑bullying commitment include:
-
Article 19 – The right to be safe and protected from harm
We take all necessary measures to keep students safe from physical and emotional harm.
-
Article 2 – The right to be treated fairly and without discrimination
Every child is valued and respected, regardless of their identity or background.
-
Article 12 – The right to be heard and taken seriously
Students are encouraged to speak up, share concerns, and play an active role in creating a safe school culture.
-
Article 28 & 29 – The right to an education that develops talents and abilities
A bullying‑free environment ensures all students can succeed academically and personally.
Embedding these rights into daily school life helps us foster a culture where bullying is not tolerated and positive relationships are prioritised.
Creating a Respectful School Culture
We promote an environment where:
- Students are taught to respect and value each other’s differences.
- Staff model positive behaviour and reinforce a culture of kindness.
- Students learn about healthy relationships, diversity, and empathy through PSHE, assemblies, and Rights Respecting activities.
- All members of our academy are encouraged to contribute to a warm, caring, and inclusive atmosphere.
Our proactive approach focuses on education, early intervention, and strong pastoral care.
Reporting Concerns
We encourage all students to speak to a trusted adult if:
- They feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
- They believe they are being bullied.
- They witness someone else experiencing bullying or unkind behaviour.
No worry is ever too small. We want students and parents/carers to feel confident in coming forward so issues can be addressed swiftly.
Bullying cannot be dealt with if the academy is unaware of the problem.
If you or your child is concerned about bullying, please contact a member of the pastoral or safeguarding team without delay.
How We Respond to Bullying
When a concern is raised, we:
- Listen carefully and take the matter seriously.
- Investigate thoroughly and sensitively.
- Take appropriate action in line with our policies.
- Support all parties involved, including those impacted by bullying and those who need help to change their behaviour.
- Monitor the situation to ensure the issue does not continue.
Our aim is not only to resolve incidents effectively but also to educate students so they understand the impact of their actions and develop more positive behaviours moving forward.
Working Together
Preventing bullying is a shared responsibility. By working closely with students, families, and the wider school community, we ensure Barnsley Academy remains a place where every young person feels safe, respected, and able to learn confidently.
