A Five-Year Journey of Building Powerful Knowledge
At Barnsley Academy, our curriculum is designed as a five-year journey, where knowledge builds year on year. What students learn in Year 7 lays the foundation for success in Year 8, and this pattern continues all the way through to Year 11. Every lesson matters, every day—from the moment students join us to the moment we celebrate their achievements at the Leavers’ Assembly.
Why Revision Homework Matters
Classroom learning alone isn’t enough. To retain powerful knowledge and avoid gaps that can affect performance in assessments and exams, students need a consistent approach to revision homework. Without it, knowledge can fade—impacting confidence and success.
A Better Approach to Homework
This year, we’re committed to getting homework right. Our goal is to ensure students know what to revise and, more importantly, how to revise independently. We also want to give parents and carers the clarity and guidance needed to support effective revision at home.
Over the summer term, we used educational research to develop a sustainable and impactful homework strategy. All subjects now use two core tools: flash cards and knowledge organisers.
We began teaching students how to revise at home last year and will continue to embed these skills throughout the year—empowering every student to take ownership of their learning and succeed.
