Character in Action

At Barnsley Academy, we believe that every student has the potential to lead, contribute, and make a positive impact on the world around them. Our Character in Action programme shines a spotlight on the experiences, opportunities, and achievements that help shape confident, compassionate, and ambitious young people.

Volunteering Opportunities

Our students regularly give their time, energy, and creativity to support others. Volunteering helps them build essential character traits such as resilience, teamwork, empathy, and leadership.
  • Supporting local primary schools with events and reading projects.
  • Assisting at community foodbanks and charity shops.
  • Taking part in local clean-up initiatives and environmental action.
  • Volunteering at school open evenings, parents’ evenings, and community events.
  • Fundraising for local and national charities.
  • Northern College – Wentworth Garden volunteering project

Fundraising

At Barnsley Academy, fundraising is an important part of our Character in Action programme. It gives students the chance to show kindness, empathy, teamwork, and a real commitment to making a difference in the community. Each year, our students throw themselves into a wide range of charitable events, supporting both local and national causes with enthusiasm and pride.

From energetic whole‑school activities to small acts of generosity, our students continue to demonstrate what it means to live out our values of Ambition, Determination, and Respect.

Some of our key fundraising events include:

  • Soccer Aid – supporting global children’s charities through sports and teamwork.
  • Sheffield Children’s Hospital Christmas Donations – bringing comfort and joy to young patients and their families.
  • Poppy Day Appeal – honouring remembrance and supporting the Royal British Legion.
  • Christmas Jumper Day – raising money for children’s charities while spreading festive cheer.
  • Community Christmas Fayre – a school‑wide event bringing together families, staff, and local residents to support good causes.
  • Reindeer Run – Barnsley Hospice – a festive, fun-filled way to raise funds for essential local hospice care.

These activities not only raise vital funds for charities but also help our students grow as compassionate, active citizens who understand their power to make a positive impact in the world.

College and University Visits:
Alongside our residential and adventure experiences, students regularly take part in visits to colleges and universities. These visits help raise aspirations, broaden horizons, and give students first‑hand insight into future pathways. From experiencing university lectures and workshops, to exploring specialist college facilities and meeting current students, these opportunities support informed decision‑making and inspire academic ambition.

Through these experiences, students learn independence, responsibility, and a belief in their own potential.
