Knowledge Organisers

Champions of Powerful Knowledge

As part of our Key Stage 3 curriculum at Barnsley Academy, students are expected to secure essential knowledge across all subjects. This knowledge not only deepens understanding and prepares students for GCSE study, but also supports them in making sense of the world around them. Rooted in our values of Ambition, Determination and Respect, we are committed to ensuring every student strives for excellence and takes pride in their learning.

Champions of Powerful Knowledge runs alongside our curriculum, supporting students to confidently recall and apply core knowledge so that they know more, do more and remember more.

Students receive a Knowledge Organiser at the start of each term, which outlines the key knowledge they need to learn. For home learning, students use the ‘look, cover, write, check, correct’ method to practise this knowledge weekly.

The Big Quiz

Each half-term, students complete one ‘Big Quiz’ per subject, consisting of 25 questions. These assessments are designed to check how well students have retained and understood the core knowledge:

  • 100% earns 10 merits
  • 80% earns 6 merits

Students are rewarded and recognised for their efforts:

  • Certificates are awarded for achieving 100% in 5 or more tests
  • Students achieving 80% or above across all subjects are celebrated in half-termly assemblies
  • Progress is reported home every half-term and discussed during Progress Evenings

The aim is for every student to become a true Champion of Powerful Knowledge by mastering the core content in each subject. We are incredibly proud of the commitment our students show and the progress they make. By developing strong knowledge foundations and a love of learning, our students are well-equipped for future success.
