Duke of Edinburgh

At Barnsley Academy, we are proud to offer both the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programmes, giving our students the chance to challenge themselves, develop independence and build valuable life skills. The DofE journey helps young people grow in confidence, resilience and determination—qualities that reflect our core values of Ambition, Determination and Respect.

What the DofE Involves

All participants work through four key sections:

  • Volunteering – supporting others and contributing to the community
  • Physical – improving health, fitness and wellbeing
  • Skills – developing a new interest or talent
  • Expedition – planning, training and completing a team journey in the outdoors

Our Bronze and Silver programmes offer students increasing levels of challenge, leadership and responsibility. Silver participants build on their Bronze experience through longer expeditions, advanced navigation, and more independent decision‑making throughout their journey.

We ensure every young person is supported from start to finish, with experienced staff and qualified outdoor leaders guiding them through training, preparation and assessment.
